Campus Safety Procedures

Evacuation Policy

Primary Evacuation Location

In the event that buildings must be evacuated, or students and faculty are required to leave the property quickly, the following location will serve as our designated evacuation site:
Walmer Road Baptist Church
188 Lowther Ave
416-924-1121

This facility has agreed to act as our emergency gathering and communication point should an evacuation be necessary. It will also serve as the designated parent pick-up location if access to the school is restricted by emergency services, including Police or Fire.

Secondary Evacuation Location

Toronto Fire Services Station 312
240 Howland Ave (north end of Howland Ave.)

This location should be considered a secondary evacuation option only. It is intended for use when travel south on Howland Avenue cannot be managed safely, and evacuation requires movement northbound.

Please make yourselves familiar with these two locations in the event that the school is required to evacuate.
Both locations are the same distance (400 m) and take the same amount of time to reach (5 minutes).

Routines and Expectations

Fire Drill

Each classroom has a posted evacuation route. All teachers and staff should be familiar with the nearest exits and evacuation procedures. Designated adults will conduct a sweep of each floor to ensure the building has been fully cleared.

In the event of a fire alarm:

List of 11 items.

  • Remain calm.

  • Take your class attendance list with you.

Attendance lists are posted near classroom doors.
  • Instruct students to remain quiet, calm, and together.

  • Close windows.

  • Exit using the posted evacuation route.

  • Close the classroom door behind you. Do not lock the door.

  • Keep your class together at all times.

  • Proceed directly to the designated area on the tarmac.

All students and faculty are expected to gather on the asphalt surface of the tarmac. Please do not remain on the turf or on the walkways between the Senior School, See House, and the tarmac unless directed otherwise by staff or emergency personnel.
  • Take attendance immediately.

Send a runner to the southeast corner of the tarmac to report attendance to a senior administrator.
  • Do not re-enter the building until clearance has been given.

  • Remain with your class and wait for instructions.

School Lockdown Procedures

A lockdown procedure minimizes access and visibility and shelters students, teachers, staff, and visitors in secure locations. Staff members within the school are responsible for students, and no one leaves the safe area. School personnel will also secure building entrances, ensuring that no unauthorized individuals, such as staff and students, leave the building.

School lockdown procedures would only be invoked in situations, which constitute life threatening events, and where a facility evacuation could be fatal.
